About the Kirkpatrick Tartan

Clan Kirkpatrick is an old Lowland clan of Dumfriesshire, taking its name from the church of Saint Patrick in the parish of Closeburn. Ivone de Kirkpatrick witnessed a charter of the Bruce family in the 12th century, and Alexander II confirmed the family in their lands. Long seated at Closeburn Castle — one of the oldest inhabited tower houses in Scotland — the Kirkpatricks are famous above all for their steadfast loyalty to Robert the Bruce.

Whether you bear the Kirkpatrick or Kilpatrick name, descend from Dumfriesshire, or simply admire a clan famed for its loyalty, this collection brings the Kirkpatrick tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Kirkpatrick Tartan Pattern & Colours

The Kirkpatrick tartan is a handsome sett of deep blue and green crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of red and white — the blue recalling the saltire of the clan arms, and dignified colours fitting for a staunch old clan of the Dumfriesshire dales.

Kirkpatrick Clan Heritage

The Kirkpatricks were close allies of the Bruces, their Dumfriesshire neighbours, and Sir Roger Kirkpatrick of Closeburn stood with Robert the Bruce at the fateful meeting in the Greyfriars Kirk at Dumfries in 1306, when the Red Comyn was slain and Bruce set on the road to the throne. The clan's motto and crest — a hand and dagger, and the words "I mak siccar" — are said to spring from that dramatic day.

Rewarded by the grateful king, the Kirkpatricks held Closeburn and fought on in Bruce's cause, and Sir Roger later took Caerlaverock and Dalswinton castles from the English. The chiefs were created Baronets of Closeburn in 1685. Branches of the name spread through the south-west and to Ireland as Kilpatrick, and one line, the Kirkpatricks of Málaga in Spain, gave an empress to France — Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III. The crest is a hand grasping a dagger, the motto I Mak Siccar.
