About the Kinnaird Tartan
The Kinnaird name is territorial, from the Gaelic an ceann ard, "the high headland," borne by the barony of Kinnaird in the Carse of Gowrie in Perthshire. In the 12th century King William the Lion granted these lands by charter to a nobleman of Norman stock, whose descendants took the Kinnaird name and held their ground in Gowrie for eight centuries, rising to the peerage as the Lords Kinnaird of Inchture.

Kinnaird Family Heritage
From their charter of William the Lion in the 12th century, the Kinnairds held the barony of Kinnaird in the fertile Carse of Gowrie, neighbours to the Hays of Errol and the Grays of Castle Huntly in that famous countryside between the Sidlaws and the Tay. George Kinnaird of Inchture, a staunch supporter of the royal cause, was knighted and then raised to the peerage as Lord Kinnaird in 1682.
The family made their seat at Rossie Priory in the Carse, and served Scotland in parliament, banking and public life. The most famous of the line was Arthur Kinnaird, 11th Lord Kinnaird — the greatest footballer of the Victorian age, who played in a record nine FA Cup finals and served the Football Association for half a century, one of the true fathers of the modern game. The Kinnaird name remains written proudly across the Carse of Gowrie.
