About the Hopkirk Tartan

The Hopkirk name is a rare and old one of the Scottish Borders, taken from the ancient parish of Hopekirk — now Hobkirk — in Roxburghshire, in the Vale of Rule near Hawick. The name means "the kirk in the hope," from the old word hope for a small valley or hollow among the hills. An old Border family name, the Hopkirks are most fittingly worn with a district tartan of their Roxburghshire home.

Whether you bear the Hopkirk or Hobkirk name, descend from Roxburghshire or the Borders, or simply admire a rare old name of the frontier, this collection brings a fitting district tartan into apparel, accessories, home decor and heritage gifts.

Hopkirk District Tartan Colours

The collection draws on the soft, natural colours of the Border country — deep greens and heather tones crossed with fine lines — recalling the quiet Vale of Rule and the green braes of Teviotdale, where the little kirk of Hopekirk gave the family its name.

Hopkirk Family Heritage

The parish of Hopekirk in Roxburghshire is of great antiquity, its church recorded as Hoppchirk as early as 1220, in the reign of Alexander II. From this old kirk in the vale the family took its name, and Hopkirks appear in the records of the Borders through the centuries, with old tombs of the name to be found at Hobkirk, Jedburgh, Dryburgh and Melrose.

James Hopkirk served as a reader in the church at Carrington in 1574. In the turbulent religious struggles of the 17th century, a laird of the name, a professed Covenanter, was informed upon by a neighbouring laird, arrested for his beliefs and exiled; he was drowned off the Orkneys in 1679, one of many who suffered for the Covenant. The name endures, rare but proud, among the families of the Borders and their descendants across the world.
