About the Hay Tartan
Clan Hay is one of the great clans of Scotland, of Norman origin from the barony of La Haye in Normandy. By legend the family sprang from a farmer and his two sons who, armed only with an ox-yoke, turned the tide against the Danes at the Battle of Luncarty, winning the lands of Errol and the motto Serva Jugum. Hay Clan Heritage
William de Haya was cup-bearer to King Malcolm IV about 1160, and gained the barony of Errol in the Carse of Gowrie through marriage to the Celtic heiress Eva of Pitmilly. During the Wars of Independence Sir Gilbert Hay of Erroll stood firmly by Robert the Bruce, fought at Bannockburn in 1314, and was made Hereditary Lord High Constable of Scotland with the lands of Slains in Aberdeenshire — an office giving the Hays precedence in Scotland second only to the royal family.
The chiefs, Earls of Erroll, held the coastal fortress of Slains, whose later ruin is said to have inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula. A branch, the Hays of Yester, became Marquesses of Tweeddale, while the Hays of Delgatie gave the great soldier Sir William Hay, Montrose's Chief-of-Staff. Staunch Catholics and later Jacobites, the Hays kept their faith through storm and exile. The crest is a falcon, the badge mistletoe, and the motto Serva Jugum.
