About the Hannay Tartan
Clan Hannay is a Lowland Scottish clan of Galloway, the ancient princedom of the south-west. The name — once spelt Ahannay, and found also as Hanna, Hannah and Hanney — is of uncertain but old origin, and the family held the lands of Sorbie in Wigtownshire from the 13th century. A clan with its own chief, the Hannay of Kirkdale, and its own tartan, the Hannays are one of the historic clans of the south-west.

Hannay Clan Heritage
Gilbert de Hannethe appears on the Ragman Roll of 1296, and is said to have acquired the lands of Sorbie. Unlike many Scots, the Hannays supported John Balliol rather than Robert the Bruce, for Balliol sprang through his mother Devorgilla from the old Celtic Lords of Galloway, the Hannays' own country. The clan fought at Sauchieburn in 1488 and at Flodden in 1513, and built their tower at Sorbie, which commanded their growing lands.
The Hannays feuded with the Kennedys, the Dunbars and, most bitterly, the Murrays of Broughton, a quarrel that saw them outlawed in 1601 and, by about 1640, the loss of Sorbie itself; many Hannays then crossed to Ulster, where the name Hanna is still found. James Hannay, Dean of St Giles', was the target of Jenny Geddes's famous stool in 1637. The senior line today is the Hannays of Kirkdale. The crest is a cross crosslet issuing from a crescent, the motto Per Ardua Ad Alta.
