About the Hall Tartan
The Hall name is an old one of the Scottish Borders, from the Anglo-Norman de Aula, "of the hall," the hall being the chief house of a manor. Of Norman origin, the Halls settled on both sides of the border, at Redesdale in England and in Liddesdale and East Teviotdale in Scotland, where they became one of the great riding families of the Marches. An old Border family with a registered tartan of its own, the Halls were feared and famed alike as reivers.

Hall Family Heritage
The Halls came to Britain among the Anglo-Norman families, and were established in Scotland under Malcolm Canmore and David I. They split into branches: one held the lands of Glenryg in the barony of Lesmahagow, another became the de Aulas, or Halls, of Fulbar in Renfrewshire, and Thomas Hall served as personal physician to King Robert II. But it was on the Borders that the name became most famous, among the riding families of the Marches.
As one of the sixty great riding families of the Border, the Halls of Redesdale, Teviotdale and Liddesdale lived in the turbulent world of the reivers, loyal above all to their own name. Their story is remembered in the old Border ballad The Death of Parcy Reed, and Halls held the pele tower at Otterburn in later times. Through the centuries the name has spread from the Borders across Britain and the world, keeping its hardy Border character.
