About the Grant Tartan

Clan Grant is a great Highland clan of Strathspey, on the banks of the River Spey. By tradition the Grants are one of the principal branches of Siol Alpine, the ancient kindred of which Clan Gregor is chief, and their name may come from a moor called the "Plain of the Sun" in their homeland, or from the old word for "great." A clan with its own chief, the Lord Strathspey, the Grants have a rich array of their own tartans.

Whether you bear the Grant name, descend from Strathspey or Glen Urquhart, or simply admire a great clan of the Spey, this collection brings the Grant tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Grant Tartan Pattern & Colours

The Grant tartan is a bold and handsome sett built on a deep red ground crossed with green and blue and lined with black and white — warm, striking colours worn by the clan of the Spey. The green-based Grant Hunting sett offers quieter, woodland tones for everyday and outdoor wear.

Grant Clan Heritage

The earliest Grants appear in Scotland in the mid-13th century, acquiring the lands of Stratherrick through the marriage of a Grant to Mary, daughter of Sir John Bisset, and Sir Laurence le Grand rose to be Sheriff of Inverness. The family supported Robert the Bruce, and Randolph and John de Grant were captured fighting at the Battle of Dunbar in 1296. With Bruce's victory came rewards, and the Grants secured their great territory of Strathspey, along with Glen Urquhart and Glenmoriston.

For centuries the Grants held Strathspey from their seat at Castle Grant, gathering the clan at the rock of Craigellachie with the slogan "Stand Fast, Craigellachie." After Culloden, eighty-four of the Glenmoriston Grants who had laid down their arms were cruelly transported to Barbados. The chief is the Lord Strathspey. The crest is a burning hill, the badge the Scots pine, and the motto Stand Fast.
