The Story of Glencoe
The MacDonalds of Glencoe, known in Gaelic as Clann Iain Abrach, lived in the glen from the early 14th century, holding their lands as a branch of Clan Donald. Theirs was a hard and beautiful country of mountain and moor, and they were a proud Highland people, loyal to the Jacobite cause in the risings that swept Scotland at the close of the 17th century.
In February 1692 the glen became the scene of a great tragedy, when government soldiers who had been received as guests turned upon their hosts, and some thirty of the MacDonalds were killed — an event long remembered as the Massacre of Glencoe, ordered by the King's Secretary of State. The breach of the ancient trust of hospitality shocked all Scotland, and the memory of it endures. Today the glen is cherished for its wild beauty and its poignant history alike.
