About the Fullerton Tartan
The Fullerton name — also Fullarton and Fulton — is an old territorial one of Ayrshire, taken from the barony of Fullarton in the parish of Dundonald, from the Old English for "the settlement of the fowlers." The family were said to be hereditary fowlers and falconers to the crown, providing fowl for the royal table. Long connected with Clan Boyd through their Ayrshire lands, those of the Fullerton name are most fittingly worn with the Boyd tartan.

Fullerton Family Heritage
Alanus de Fowlertoun, who died around 1280, founded a convent of Carmelite friars at Irvine, and his son Adam received a charter of the lands of Foullartoun in Kyle Stewart from James, the High Steward of Scotland. When Robert the Bruce was in hiding on the Isle of Arran during his darkest days, the Fullertons gave him their support, and were rewarded with a charter of the lands of Kilmichael on Arran in 1307 — lands the family held for some five hundred years.
A branch of the family also held Fullerton in the sheriffdom of Forfar, granted by Robert I in 1327. The Fullertons of Kilmichael and Whitefarland on Arran, sometimes known by the name Macloy, bore a camel's head crest and the motto Lux in Tenebris, "light in darkness." Many Fullertons later settled in Ulster during the plantation of the 17th century, carrying the name across the sea to Ireland and beyond.
