The kingdom of Ossory was ancient even by Irish measure, founded in the 2nd century, and its kings carried an unbroken male line down the centuries. King Gilla Pátraic, who reigned in the late 10th century, gave the family its name: his son Donnchadh was the first to be styled Mac Giolla Phádraig, and was called by the annals "the champion of Ireland." From this line branched the Costigan and O'Dunphy septs of Upper Ossory.
After the Norman invasion of 1169 the Mac Giolla Phádraig held on to the northern part of their kingdom, Upper Ossory, in the Slieve Bloom mountains of modern County Laois. In 1541 Barnaby Mac Giolla Phádraig became the first Gaelic lord to accept an English peerage under Henry VIII's surrender and regrant, taking the title Baron of Upper Ossory and the anglicised name Fitzpatrick — a Norman-looking name that was in truth a direct translation of a Gaelic original.
