Family Name Fiddes
Region Aberdeenshire & the Mearns
Origin Fiddes — "wood-stance"
Tartan Worn Aberdeen District

About the Fiddes Tartan

The Fiddes name is an old territorial one of the north-east of Scotland, taken from the lands of Fiddes in Foveran in Aberdeenshire, or from the old barony of Fiddes — earlier Futhes or Fothes — in Kincardineshire, from a Gaelic name thought to mean "wood-stance." An old family name of the Mearns and Aberdeenshire rather than a Highland clan, Fiddes is most fittingly worn with the district tartan of Aberdeen.

This collection celebrates the Fiddes name and its long heritage in the north-east, bringing a fitting district tartan into apparel, accessories, home decor and heritage gifts for those who carry an old name of Aberdeenshire and the Mearns.

Fiddes & Aberdeen District Colours

Worn through the Aberdeen District tartan, the collection draws on a rich palette of green and blue with black and a warm line of red — the handsome colours chosen for the granite city and its shire, fitting for an old family long rooted in the fertile country of the Mearns and lower Don.

Fiddes Family Heritage

Eadmund de Fotheis and his son Alwinus witnessed charters between 1200 and 1207, the first of the name on record. In 1289 Fergus de Fothes, son of John de Fothes, received a charter of the whole tenement of Fothes from Alexander Comyn, Earl of Buchan, one of the greatest magnates of the age. The family held their north-eastern lands through the medieval centuries, appearing steadily in the rolls of the Mearns and Aberdeen.

Eustace de Futhes was a collector of contributions in Aberdeenshire in 1373, and the family spread into the burgh of Aberdeen and as far as Orkney, where Duncan of Futhas held a charter of a tenement in Kirkwall in 1435. Andrew de Fothes was styled lord of that Ilk in 1423. Through eight centuries the name — in its many forms of Fothes, Futhes and Fiddes — has kept its place in the story of the north-east of Scotland.
