About the Dunlop Tartan

Clan Dunlop takes its name from the lands of Dunlop in the district of Cunningham in Ayrshire, from the old Gaelic for "fort at the bend" or muddy place by the winding water. Found in many spellings — Dunlop, Dunlap, Delap — the family held its Ayrshire lands from the 13th century under the Stewarts. An armigerous clan today, the Dunlops have their own distinctive tartan.

Whether you bear the Dunlop, Dunlap or Delap name, descend from Ayrshire, or simply admire an old Lowland clan of inventors and soldiers, this collection brings the Dunlop tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Dunlop Tartan Pattern & Colours

The Dunlop tartan, created in 1982 for the Dunlop family, is based on the tartan of the allied Clan Cunningham, with bands of blue and black crossed by red and white — warm, dignified colours that mark the old kinship between the two great Ayrshire families of the district of Cunningham.

Dunlop Clan Heritage

Dom Willelmus de Dunlop witnessed a charter at Irvine in 1260, and Neel Fitz Robert de Dullope rendered homage in 1296, bearing the ancient Dunlop arms of a red double-headed eagle on silver. The family held the lands of Dunlop under the overlordship of the Stewarts, the future royal house, and rose as landed gentry of Ayrshire. In the religious struggles of the 17th century the Dunlops were staunch Covenanters, suffering forfeiture and imprisonment for their faith.

William Dunlop the Elder sailed to Carolina in 1680 before returning to become Principal of Glasgow University in 1690. General James Dunlop commanded a brigade under Wellington in the Peninsular War, and the world remembers John Boyd Dunlop, the Ayrshire-descended inventor of the pneumatic tyre, which transformed travel forever. The crest is a hand holding a dagger, and the motto Merito, "deservedly."
