The Battle of Culloden
By the spring of 1746 the Jacobite army of Prince Charles Edward Stuart — "Bonnie Prince Charlie" — was short of supplies and weary after the long retreat from Derby. On 16 April, on the open moor at Culloden, the exhausted Highlanders faced the well-drilled government army of the Duke of Cumberland across ground ill-suited to their charge. In under an hour, raked by cannon and musketry, the Jacobite army was broken, with around a thousand men killed.
The defeat ended the Stuart cause forever. In its aftermath came harsh reprisals across the Highlands and the Act of Proscription, which banned the wearing of tartan and Highland dress for a generation, and struck at the very heart of the clan system. The battlefield is now cared for as a place of memory, its clan grave-markers and memorial cairn a quiet reminder of all that was lost. The Culloden tartan keeps that memory alive.
