Copeland Family Heritage
The name appears on both sides of the border from early times: William de Copland is recorded around 1160 in the reign of Malcolm IV, Rodbert de Copland held land at Greenlaw in Roxburghshire around 1200, and Samson de Copland appears in Northumberland in 1204. The most famous bearer was John de Coupland, the hero of the Battle of Neville's Cross in 1346, who captured King David II of Scotland on the field.
The Copelands settled widely through the Borders and into Scotland, with concentrations in Lanarkshire and Midlothian, and a notable line at Peterhead in the north-east. Patrick Copland was professor of natural philosophy at Aberdeen in the 1770s. Like many border families, the Copelands carried their name to Ulster and on to America, where it remains common today.
