About the Colville Tartan
Clan Colville is a Lowland Scottish clan of Norman origin, the name taken from Colleville in Normandy. Philip de Colville came to Scotland in the 12th century, witnessing royal charters and being given as a hostage for the release of King William the Lion in 1174. The family held the baronies of Oxnam in the Borders, Ochiltree in Ayrshire and Kinnaird in Stirlingshire. A clan with its own chief — the Viscount of Culross — the Colvilles have their own distinctive tartan.

Colville Clan Heritage
The fortunes of the family owed much to E'stace de Colville, heiress of Oxnam, who appears on the Ragman Roll of 1296 and married Sir Reginald Cheyne of Inverugie; her grants to Melrose Abbey were confirmed in 1324, and the barony of Ochiltree confirmed by David II in 1350. A bitter feud broke out with the mighty House of Douglas after Sir Richard Colville slew John Auchinleck, a friend of the Earl of Douglas, in 1449 — the Douglases laying waste the Colville lands and taking Kinnaird Castle by force.
Sir Robert Colville, steward to Queen Margaret, fell with most of his men at Flodden in 1513. His descendant Sir James Colville exchanged Ochiltree for Easter Wemyss with Hamilton of Finnart in 1530, and in 1604 was raised to the peerage as Lord Colville of Culross — a title the chiefs bear still, now as Viscounts of Culross. The town of Colville in Washington State carries the name across the Atlantic. The crest is a hind's head, the motto Oblier Ne Puis.
