About the Charteris Tartan
Clan Charteris is a Lowland Scottish clan of Norman origin, the name taken from the French city of Chartres — rendered in Latin as de Carnoto. A son of the Lord of Chartres is said to have come to England with the Conqueror, his descendant travelling north with David I and settling at Amisfield in Dumfriesshire. A clan with its own chief, today the Earl of Wemyss and March, the Charteris family is most fittingly worn with the Wemyss tartan of the chiefly line, or a district tartan.

Charteris Clan Heritage
Sir Thomas de Charteris was appointed Lord High Chancellor of Scotland by Alexander III in 1280, and William de Charteris stood with Robert the Bruce in 1306 when the Red Comyn was slain at Dumfries. The family held the Wardenship of the West March, and in 1530 Sir Robert Charteris, the 8th Laird, fought a famous duel with Sir James Douglas of Drumlanrig before the king himself — one of the last great chivalric contests — until Charteris's sword was broken and the king parted the combatants.
When the male line ended, the estates passed through an heiress to the Earls of Wemyss: a younger son, Francis Wemyss, inherited Amisfield and took the name and arms of Charteris. From this union descend the Earls of Wemyss and March, chiefs of the name, seated at Gosford House and Neidpath Castle. The chief today is James Charteris, Earl of Wemyss and March. The crest is a hand holding a dagger, and the motto This Is Our Charter plays on the family name.
