About the Boyd Tartan
Clan Boyd is a Lowland Scottish clan long seated at Kilmarnock in Ayrshire. The name is thought to come from the Gaelic buidhe, "fair" or "yellow," or from Bòid, "of Bute." First recorded with Robert de Boyd around 1205, the family rose to become Lords Boyd and Earls of Kilmarnock, with their great seat at Dean Castle. A clan with its own chief — the Lord Kilmarnock — the Boyds have their own distinctive tartan.

Boyd Clan Heritage
Sir Robert Boyd was one of Robert the Bruce's ablest commanders at Bannockburn in 1314, and was rewarded with the Barony of Kilmarnock and lands taken from the Balliols. Dean Castle became the family's stronghold for some four hundred years. Raised to the peerage as Lord Boyd of Kilmarnock in 1454, the family reached extraordinary heights when Robert, 1st Lord Boyd, became a regent of the young James III, and his son Thomas married Princess Mary and was made Earl of Arran — before rivals brought a sudden fall.
Created Earls of Kilmarnock in 1661, the Boyds met their greatest tragedy in 1746, when William, 4th Earl, came out for Prince Charles Edward Stuart, was captured at Culloden, and was beheaded on Tower Hill. The earldom was forfeited, though the chiefship endures in the Lord Kilmarnock. The crest, a right hand raised in oath, and the motto Confido — "I trust" — capture the loyal spirit of the clan.
