18th Century: Members of the Anderson family of Candacraig served the British East India Company. The clerical and legal family of Anderson of Inchyra were founded when Rev. David Anderson acquired the estate of Inchyra but originally had origins in Perthshire.

Many subsequent male members of this family were lawyers or served in the East India Company. They came to possess the additional estate of St. Germains in East Lothian. 

Two further groups of Andersons were the Glasgow families of Dowhill and Stobcross. The Stobcross family gave their name to the urban district of Anderston, originally ‘Anderson’s Town’. Their kinsmen, the Andersons of Dowhill became prominent merchants; John Anderson of Dowhill was twice Provost of Glasgow in the 1660s.

19th Century: The Andersons of Candacraig moved to Canada. In 1836, their relative Sir Alexander Anderson of Blelack established the North of Scotland Bank, served as Lord Provost of Aberdeen and was knighted in 1863.
